Google Classroom Essentials

A self-paced eLearning course designed to help educators create, organize, and assign classwork in Google Classroom through guided software demonstrations, practice, and assessment.

Educators often need practical, step-by-step support when learning to use Google Classroom for creating and organizing assignments. The goal of this project was to create a clear, self-paced learning experience that reduced cognitive overload and allowed learners to apply each task as they progressed.

The course was designed for educators who are new to Google Classroom or who need additional support creating, organizing, and assigning classwork.

The Challenge

Educators often need practical, step-by-step support when learning to use Google Classroom for creating and organizing assignments. The goal of this project was to create a clear, self-paced learning experience that reduced cognitive overload and allowed learners to apply each task as they progressed.

The Solution

The solution was a self-paced eLearning course that guides learners through creating and organizing classwork in Google Classroom. The course combines concise instruction, software demonstrations, optional tips, guided practice, and a final knowledge check to support both learning and application.

Design Process

I used the ADDIE framework to guide the project from analysis through evaluation. I identified the learner need, organized the content into manageable steps, developed software demonstrations and optional support, created opportunities for guided practice, and developed a final knowledge check aligned with the course objectives.

Assessment & Evaluation

Learning was assessed through a six-question final knowledge check with an 80% passing score. Learners received immediate feedback, could review their responses, and had the opportunity to retry the assessment. The course also included guided practice and a checklist so learners could apply each skill before completing the final assessment.

After further study of WCAG principles and Quality Matters guidelines, I revisited the course to strengthen accessibility and usability. I improved the reading order of slide elements, removed decorative objects from the screen-reader reading order, and added text alternatives to instructional video content. I also tested keyboard navigation for course controls, identified limitations with embedded video controls, strengthened text-based directions and feedback, and enabled iSpring's Accessibility Mode.

These revisions helped me consider not only whether the course was instructionally effective, but also whether learners could access, understand, and navigate the content in different ways.

Accessibility & Inclusive Design

Design Decisions & Iterations

Throughout development and testing, I refined the navigation, visual hierarchy, learner support, assessment flow, and accessibility features to make the experience clearer and easier to use. Previewing, publishing, and testing the course helped me identify opportunities to improve spacing, instructions, feedback, keyboard navigation, reading order, and overall consistency before publishing the final version.

My Role

I designed and developed the course from concept to final production, including content structure, visual design, software demonstrations, learner practice, navigation, assessment, accessibility revisions, and testing.
